Taoyuan, Taiwan to Narita, Japan crosses 1 time zones — and you’re going east, the harder direction. Narita is 1 hours ahead of home, on a flight of about 3 hours.

Your body resists going to sleep earlier far more than going to sleep later. That’s why eastbound trips like this one chew up more days than the same number of zones in the other direction — your circadian clock has to be pulled forward, against its natural drift.

For most travelers, that translates to about 1 day of feeling off. We grade this route as easy. The plan below is built around the things that actually move your body clock — light, sleep timing, caffeine, and (if you want it) a small dose of melatonin — applied at the times when they actually work.

The playbook

How to fly Taoyuan → Narita without losing the first three days.

  1. 1
Three days before — start sleeping a little earlier

Move bedtime 20 minutes earlier each night for the three nights before you fly, and wake the same amount earlier. Get bright light within 30 minutes of waking. Skip evening light — sunglasses if you’re out late.

  2. 2
On the plane — sleep when the destination sleeps

If you arrive in the morning, get four solid hours on board, aligned with night at the destination. Eye mask, no alcohol, water every hour. If you arrive in the evening, do the opposite — stay awake.

  3. 3
Day one — sunlight in the morning, no big nap

Step outside within thirty minutes of waking. A short nap is fine before 14:00 if you’re wrecked, but keep it under thirty minutes. Eat on local meal times — meals are a circadian cue almost as strong as light.

  4. 4
Optional — 0.5 mg melatonin half an hour before bed

Low-dose melatonin (0.5–1 mg) is the dose backed by research; high-dose pills are not better. Use it for the first three to five nights only. Talk to a doctor first if you take medication or are pregnant.

  5. 5
Cut caffeine eight hours before bed

Caffeine has a half-life of about five hours; eight hours before bed clears most of it. If you’re sensitive, give yourself twelve. Strategic morning coffee is fine and helps you stay awake during the destination day.

More about flying Taoyuan to Narita

Flight basics: Taoyuan → Narita

Taipei Taoyuan to Tokyo Narita is 4-5 hours eastbound, a regional route. EVA Air, ANA, and JAL are the primary carriers. This short-haul distance makes arrival timing nearly as important as sleep quality.

When to go (and when to brace)

Spring and fall are ideal—mild temperatures in both cities mean less physiological stress. Summer brings humidity and heat that exacerbates jet lag fatigue.

At Taoyuan

At Taoyuan Airport, eat a light dim sum meal 2 hours before departure. Small portions of steamed dumplings and tea provide just enough fuel without heaviness, supporting stable alertness during the flight.

After landing in Narita

Upon landing at Narita, walk through the airport's Garden area and connect train station. The 2-3 hour transition from arrival to reaching central Tokyo naturally extends your wakefulness. Eat sushi at the station before boarding the Narita Express.

What to actually expect

Taoyuan to Narita is my bread-and-butter business flight. The 4-hour gap is forgiving—arrive at mid-afternoon Tokyo time, not so late that you're tempted to crash. I've done this route dozens of times. The trick is eating light before boarding, moving through the airport slowly, and committing to the train ride to central Tokyo. That alone takes 90 minutes and gives you a manageable first day. By evening, you're ready for a normal sleep.

Frequently asked

How many hours is the time difference between Taoyuan and Narita?+

Narita is 1 hours ahead of Taoyuan. The exact gap can shift by an hour twice a year if either city observes daylight saving time.

How bad is the jet lag from Taoyuan to Narita?+

You’re flying east, crossing 1 time zones. Most people need about 1 day to feel normal. The first 48 hours are the worst — that’s when sleep is the most fragmented and the afternoon energy crash is the deepest.

Should I take melatonin?+

For eastbound trips of this size, a low dose (0.5–1 mg) thirty minutes before your destination bedtime can shave a day or two off recovery. Use it for the first three to five nights, not indefinitely. Talk to a clinician first if you take other medication or are pregnant.

When is the best time to take a nap on arrival?+

Before 14:00 local time, no longer than 30 minutes. Naps later than that bleed into the evening and push your bedtime even further back, which is the opposite of what you want.

Does staying hydrated really help?+

Cabin air is 10–20% humidity (drier than the Sahara). Dehydration mimics the symptoms of jet lag — headache, fatigue, brain fog — so a hydrated traveler is just less miserable, even if their underlying clock hasn’t shifted yet. Alcohol multiplies the effect; skip it on the flight.
